05 WRX EJ20/EJ257 hybrid crank case vent

When building a WRX/STI hybrid engine. You will find an extra crank case vent on the 2.5 block. Located on top near the center line just to the right, towards the back. In the stock STI this vents into a second set of breather tubes in the cam covers, you can drill and tap the WRX cam covers or weld on a nipple. The rout I took was much easier, no welding or drilling. My set up is on the second photo.

I think this is a great picture for this (borrowed from another source):

For 2.5 heads - it makes sense to hook up the new 2.5 block breather, it's designed that way for a reason.

1000 Miles on New Hybrid, with 272 Cams, No problems yet. still tuning.
But everything is venting correctly.

Any questions just ask. Take care and thanks for visiting. Don L.

  1. This is awesome! But where is the best place to hook up a catch can for the ej205 block?

  2. Anywhere between the C-case cross over tubes and the intake pipe. If you look closely at the photo of the plumbing laying on the ground it is labeled where the catch can is plumbed into. (the green ish hoses) Good luck. Glad this old post helped you. I do not even have this car anymore. lol

  3. hows this setup working for you after a few years? Just started up my 04 hybrid build and that one breather line is spitting what seems like a bit of oil. Was thinking of setting up like you did minus catch cans for the time being just to get this thing moving again. haha
